If Preschool Teachers Ruled The World
by Istar Schwager, Ph.D.

We’d use our words. No hitting, grabbing or wars.

We’d share our toys and other resources.

We’d sing together.

We’d ask ourselves “how would I feel if…?” to understand each other.

We’d eat more veggies at meals and snacktimes.

We’d really listen to each other.

We’d have outdoor time everyday, even in cold weather.

We’d take turns.

We’d ask lots of questions, and use many ways to find things out.

We’d read aloud.

We’d use all our senses as a way to learn.

We’d get enough sleep, with naps when needed.

We’d paint whatever we want, without anybody asking, “what is that?”

We’d get to know our own neighborhoods.

We’d recycle materials in creative ways.

We’d have time outs if we weren’t ready to be “part of the group.”

We’d respect individual differences.

We’d make sure early childhood programs have the resources they need.

We’d know that we are all works in progress.
